FAQ
What is polished concrete?
Polished concrete is not simply a chemical or sealer applied to the slab; it is a mechanical process that transforms concrete into a smooth surface. We use various densifiers and polishing pads, all of which are non-toxic. We offer four primary finishes: Burnish, Salt and Pepper, Random Exposure, and Full Exposure (more detailed information on these finishes is available upon request).
Can you polish an old slab?
Yes, any slab can be polished. Typically, finishing options for older slabs are limited to Random or Full Exposure, depending on the age of the concrete.
Do you offer floor preparation or grinding?
Yes, we provide rates for floor preparation, concrete grinding, and the removal of tiles or other adhesives.
Can exposed aggregate or pool areas be grind?
Yes, this is referred to as honed concrete and can be performed on all types of outdoor concrete, no matter how old or new the concrete is.
Can you dye concrete or change its color?
While concrete dyes exist on the market, we do not currently offer this service in the South West.
Is polished concrete durable?
Yes, if properly maintained, it is very durable and resistant. However, it still requires care similar to what you would provide for a wooden floor.
Can I DIY polished concrete?
While it is possible for someone with flooring experience, it is a complex process. If the process goes wrong, you may end up paying more to undo the damage and refinish the floor, and your desired look may no longer be achievable. If you are on a tight budget, a DIY approach may ultimately be more expensive.
Do you offer "sand and seal" options?
Yes, sand and seal is a more budget-friendly option. While not as durable as mechanically polished concrete, it is a service you can inquire about.
Is it possible to have polished concrete after a project builder handover?
Yes, we can certainly do that. Your finish options may be more limited at that stage, but it is definitely possible.
Can I start the job myself and pay you to finish it?
No, we do not take over DIY projects. We only consider finishing work started by another professional company where we can identify the specific chemicals and tools used. For the best result, it is always recommended to start from scratch.
How do I keep my polished concrete clean?
We recommend using PH-neutral cleaners or simply mopping with warm water. We can provide a link to the specific product I use on my own floors. We do not recommend vinegar or citric-based cleaners, as these can damage the surface over time.
How much does polished concrete cost?
While we have set square-meter rates, each quote is tailored to the specific project. Factors such as whether the project is a home renovation, an owner-builder project, or a new build can impact the final cost.
At what stage of the build do you polish the floors?
We generally polish the floors after the gyprock is finished but before cabinetry, kitchens, and skirting boards are installed. However, floors can still be polished if these items are already in place.
What do I need to do to have polished concrete floors?
First is to talk to your builder, most of the builders are aware of what changes need to be done in order to have polished concrete floors (like concrete quality upgrades) if you are doing a owner build talk to your concreter because he will need to finished the slab differently for polished concrete, if you want a special concrete mix you might have to visit your local concrete batching plant to check their samples, and last but most important call and get quotes for the finish look you want.
